Arabic تنزيه. God is beyond comprehension, images, and material form, often summarized by the Quranic phrase, “Nothing is like unto Him”.
In Sufism, tanzih requires purifying oneself from limited, preconceived notions of God.
It is the opposite of tashbih (affirmation of similarity or anthropomorphism). Islamic theology often seeks a balance, as extreme tanzih can negate God’s attributes, while extreme tashbih can lead to idolatry.
