(Sk., “fire”). The Fire; God of Fire in the Veda; the oldest and most revered of the Gods in India. Agni is one of the three great deities: Agni, Vayu, and Surya, and he is also all three, as he is the triple aspect of Fire: the Sun in heaven; Lightning or air in the atmosphere; ordinary Fire on earth. Agni belonged to the earlier Vedic Trimurti (Trinity) before Vishnu was given a place of honour, and before Brahma and Shiva were manifested.
