The Material Question
When Shun was close to death he commanded Yu, “Take care of what I say! Concerning the body, just let it go with the flow. Concerning feelings, let them follow their course. If you go with the flow, you avoid separation. If you follow the course of feelings, you avoid exhaustion. No separation, no exhaustion, so no need to adorn the exterior of the body. When you no longer need to do this, you are free of concern with material things.”

Hurled by God from the stars
a great fall down to the earth
picking ourselves up from the mud
we strive to return
but we have forgotten the way
we have forgotten who we are
and why we are here.
Black dirt
repugnant and
filthy
is required to
plant a seed.
We must find
water to make it
grow and
water it daily.
Fire is the light
shining in a
dark world
upon a little
sprout.

The Reason is to be found on a narrow path which must be abandoned to gain access to the wide avenues of Feeling.
